What are these awards?

The SOAP awards recognise outstanding published efforts by writers, photographers and artists to cover the Covid-19 pandemic in Singapore. The arrival of the new coronavirus marked an unprecedented period of change that affected all aspects of life. 

These awards honour individuals in Singapore who, through their writing, photography or art, recorded significant events in a compelling way, helped readers understand important aspects of the crisis, or raised awareness of important issues as the pandemic unfolded.

Who is eligible

Anyone who has published impactful original work, both written and visual, that records any aspect of the pandemic in Singapore since January 2020. We want to celebrate works that resonate with readers, serves the community and evokes a response, while being accurate, courageous and of service to the community. All entries must have been published on any media platform accessible to the public.  

Categories of awards 

There will be one monthly award in these three categories:

1) Stories of up to 2,000 words 
Well written stories based on personal experience, reporting and enterprise. 

2) Commentaries of up to 1,500 words 
Thought-provoking articles, illuminating analysis and clear explanations.

3) Visual journalism — Single photographs or Visual essays 
This can be a single photograph or illustration, or a set of photos on a theme, or a story told in graphic form.

What is the prize? 

The monthly SOAP Award Winner for each of the 3 categories will receive:
$500 cash prize
Winner’s Certificate
Exclusive SOAP prize

The judges may also hand out up to 2 merit awards.  Merit Award recipients will receive:
Certificate of Commendation
Exclusive SOAP prize
(and bragging rights of course!)

All winning and merit award entries will be published in a compilation in 2021.
